Neurodiversity Affirming Practice

by in News 6 May 2025

Diversity is present in many aspects of life, including cultural diversity, biological diversity,
and racial diversity.

Similarly, there are various types of brain functioning.

The Autistic and/or ADHD neurotype is one of the common types, along with the neurotypical type.

Understanding the Autistic and/or ADHD neurotype involves recognising it as a different way of experiencing the world and interacting with others.

Neurodiversity affirming therapy recognises individual strengths and challenges, offering tailored support for their neurotype rather than trying to “fix” or pathologise it.

Neurodiversity affirming practice originates from the neurodiversity affirming movement,
which advocates for the rights and acceptance of neurodivergent individuals.

This movement shifts from seeing neurodivergence as a deficit to recognising it as natural human variation, challenging societal norms that pathologise it and promoting inclusive environments for
diverse neurological experiences.

Instead of viewing neurodivergence like Autism or ADHD as needing “fixing”, it recognises these as disabling and supports access to accommodations and supports for individual needs.
