What is ADHD?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental difference with signs beginning in childhood; however, many individuals are not diagnosed until adulthood. Adults with ADHD may have challenges with time management, organisation, emotional regulation, and maintaining focus, which can lead to difficulties in various domains in life ( home, work ).

Signs of ADHD

ADHD is characterised by persistent inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity that interfere with day-to-day functioning.

Inattention (inability to regulate attention on tasks not interested in) may includeforgetfulness, difficulty focusing listening, completing tasks, organisation difficulties, lacking attention to detail, misplacing items (e.g., phone, keys), forgetfulness, easily distracted (daydreaming) or avoiding tasks requiring sustained effort.

hyperactivity/impulsivity may include – tapping hands or feet, feeling restless, difficulty remaining seated, struggling to remain quiet during activities, talking excessively, difficulty waiting your turn (e.g., during conversations or in a queue), interrupting others (e.g., during conversations or taking over activities), often ‘on the go,’ (e.g., hectic schedule).

What is ADHD burnout?

At present, you are not able to be formally diagnosed with ADHD burnout, however, it is common experience among individuals with ADHD, especially when demands exceed available resources.

ADHD burnout is state of mental, emotional and physical exhaustion.  It usually comes about from chronic stress and managing ADHD traits. 

An individual with ADHD utilises more energy to complete the same task than an individual that doesn’t have ADHD. ADHD traits (inattention/hyperactivity/impulsivity) make it difficult to stay focused, regulate emotions and plan. The constant effort and exertion can eventually lead to burnout.

Co-occur with Autism

Co-occurring with Autism & ADHD

 Autism and ADHD (AuDHD) frequently co-occur, with studies estimating that 30-70% (Rau et al; 2020) of individuals with Autism  also meet criteria for ADHD. This overlap can lead to challenges in diagnosis and treatment, as the symptoms of both ADHD and Autism can interact and exacerbate each other.  For example, you may:

There isn’t a definitive list of things that a person can do to support their ADHD as everyone’s experience is unique, and there are contributing factors that vary greatly from person to person.  It can be helpful to see a therapist who can provide you with skills and tools to manage your unique ADHD experience.  At Bonacci Practice we can help you develop skills to manage ADHD.
